Plurilingual and polyglot are often used interchangeably, but they actually have subtle nuances.

Plurilingual refers to the ability to speak several languages, usually three or more. The emphasis is on the number of languages mastered.

Polyglot, on the other hand, implies a high level of proficiency in multiple languages. It's not just about speaking multiple languages, but about being able to use them fluently and accurately in different contexts.

In other words:

  • Plurilingual: Number of languages.

  • Polyglot: Level of proficiency in multiple languages.

How can you become plurilingual or polyglot?

The tips for becoming plurilingual or polyglot are similar to those we mentioned above:

  • Practice consistently: The key to success is to dedicate time to each language on a regular basis.

  • Surround yourself with the language: Listen to music, watch movies and series, read books and articles in the language you want to learn.

  • Talk to native speakers: Look for opportunities to interact with people who speak the language you are learning.

  • Use different learning methods: Combine classes, apps, language exchanges and other resources to stay motivated.

Multilingual: A term with a broader meaning

Multilingual refers to the ability of a person, region or country to use multiple languages. In this sense, it not only refers to the individual ability to speak several languages, but also to the linguistic diversity of a group or a society.

Examples of use of the term "multilingual":

  • Switzerland is a multilingual country, where German, French, Italian and Romansh are spoken.

  • The European Union is a multilingual institution, with 24 official languages.

  • The company has a multilingual staff, with employees from all over the world.

In summary:

  • Bilingual: Two languages.

  • Trilingual: Three languages.

  • Quadrilingual: Four or more languages.

  • Plurillingual: Number of languages (generally three or more).

  • Polyglot: High level of proficiency in multiple languages.

  • Multilingual: Individual, regional or national capacity to use several languages. #english #languages #learnlanguages
