The strangest superstitions in the world (Part II)

There are very common superstitions that predict bad luck. But do you want to discover other very rare ones from the rest of the world?

The world is full of people who believe in good and/or bad luck and depending on it, they adopt one custom or another.


The first superstitions were born at least more than 50 thousand years ago, at a time when man lived surrounded by dangers and did not know how to explain his environment.

India

Check the calendar for your beauty routine

There are days when beauty salons know that they are going to make less cash than others: It is prohibited to cut your nails on Tuesdays and Saturdays, also at night, nor can you cut or wash your hair on Thursdays and Saturdays.

The origins of these beliefs are controversial, but it is often said that cutting your nails at night brings crying, which can mean a minor loss. Historically, Thursday was the day off for barbers and Saturday was the day of Saturn – the planet Shani – praised by the ancient Hindus.



Italy

No 17

The 17th is always bad news, to the point of omitting it on streets, flights that fall on that date (more so if it is Friday) and even on hotel floors. This is because the Romans used 17 as an equivalent of the word VIXI which means "I lived", which denotes death. On the contrary, for them the number 13 means good fortune.



Iceland

Knitting in winter outside the home

There is a belief that knitting outside the home can make winter longer. A very bad omen in a country where winters are extremely cold and long.

No 4 or 9

The number four, pronounced [shi], can mean death. This is why you should avoid at all costs giving gifts that consist of four things (a bouquet of four flowers, a set of four-place dishes, etc.). Buildings often skip the fourth floor and omit apartment numbers that contain the number four. Nine is a number almost as terrible, because it is pronounced [ku], like the word suffering.


Hidden thumb

People who are especially superstitious hide their thumb in their pants when they pass near a cemetery. They have this custom because they think that by doing so, they protect their parents from death.


Be careful with your navel

In stormy weather, children should keep their stomachs warm, especially before going to sleep. In fact, it is said that if you are not careful, Raijin – the God of Thunder – will steal your navel during the storm.

If you do this you will get blisters, rashes, eczema, herpes, all kinds of diseases.

Be careful with the broom
